Low Water Pressure: Diagnosing the Cause and Fixing It for Good

The Problem That Gets Worse and the Homeowner Who Adapts

Low water pressure is a problem that household members adapt to so gradually that many don’t consciously identify it as a problem — the shower takes a minute to rinse shampoo, the dishwasher takes longer to fill, the upstairs bathroom never quite matches the downstairs. The adaptation is so successful that many households live with genuinely inadequate water pressure for years without investigating its cause.

The investigation that takes 30 minutes and costs nothing but a pressure gauge produces a clear picture of where the pressure problem originates and what’s required to address it permanently. The fix for most low-pressure situations is either inexpensive (a clogged aerator, a partially closed valve) or manageable (a failing pressure regulator, a water softener that’s restricting flow).

Measuring What You Have: The Pressure Gauge Test

A water pressure gauge ($10–$15 at any hardware store) threaded onto an outdoor hose bib measures the static supply pressure from the municipal main or well system. The measurement should be taken when no water is running in the house (static pressure), and again with several fixtures running simultaneously (dynamic pressure — the pressure under actual demand).

Normal residential static pressure: 40–80 PSI. Below 40 PSI indicates either low municipal supply pressure, a failing pressure regulator, or a supply line restriction. Above 80 PSI indicates high supply pressure that requires a pressure reducing valve (or servicing of an existing PRV that’s set too high). The measurement tells you where you are relative to normal before you investigate the cause.

The Clogged Aerator and Flow Restrictor: The Easy Fix

The most common cause of low pressure at a specific fixture (rather than whole-house low pressure) is a clogged aerator — the small screen-and-washer assembly at the tip of a faucet that mixes air into the water stream. Aerators accumulate mineral deposits and debris over time that restrict flow without restricting pressure in the rest of the system.

Unscrew the aerator from the faucet tip (counterclockwise; most are hand-tightened), soak it in white vinegar for 30–60 minutes, scrub with a small brush, and reinstall. If the aerator is too deteriorated to clean effectively, replacements cost $3–$8. Checking and cleaning all faucet aerators annually prevents the gradual flow reduction that accumulates into noticeable low pressure at specific fixtures.

Partially Closed Shutoff Valves: The Overlooked Cause

Shutoff valves that aren’t fully open — either intentionally closed partially and never reopened, or gradually tightened by accidental contact over years — restrict flow to the circuits they control without visible indication that anything is wrong. A ball valve in the ‘open’ position with the handle slightly off-parallel to the pipe, a gate valve opened only 80%, or a main shutoff that’s been partially closed for a reason that was forgotten — all create pressure restriction that disappears when the valve is fully opened.

Walk through the home and identify every shutoff valve in the plumbing system: the main shutoff at the meter or entry point, shutoffs at the water heater, shutoffs under every sink, and any inline valves in supply lines. Verify that every valve is in its fully open position. On a ball valve, fully open means the handle is parallel to the pipe. On a gate valve, fully open means the handle is turned counterclockwise until it stops.

Main Supply Line Restriction and Municipal Pressure

If aerator cleaning and valve opening don’t resolve whole-house low pressure, the restriction is further upstream. The municipal water main pressure can be checked by asking the water utility for the pressure at the main near your property — this is public information that utilities provide. If municipal pressure is adequate (above 50 PSI at the main) and whole-house pressure is low, the restriction is in the supply line between the main and the house.

Older galvanized steel main supply lines accumulate mineral deposits that progressively narrow the interior diameter over decades — an 1-inch pipe with significant mineral accumulation may have an effective interior diameter of 1/2 inch or less. The solution is pipe replacement (copper or PEX for the supply line from the meter to the home). This is a plumbing contractor project, but it’s a one-time investment that permanently resolves the restriction.
